In 1999 the Council of Europe has adopted its latest version of
the standards for fur farming with the input from fur farmers,
scientists, veterinarians, ethologists and animal welfare groups
taking into account the latest scientific information. The new
standards set the benchmark for the start of the 21st Century. The
latest Council of Europe recommendations formed the basis for the
Code of Practice of EFBA, which contains the essential
requirements for operating fur farms in each European country.
European farmers also operate under EU directives that
specifically include fur animals as part of the established
farming community and diverse national laws. The European
Commission has with encouragement of the fur sector, selected fur
farming as amongst the first to be covered by new EU Directives on
specific animal species.
Many producer countries have State or self regulated industry
inspection and reporting systems, involving veterinary or other
official scrutiny. |
